The day is bright. The surf is over. The sun is gonna set. We have two hours before the party starts in that famous beach bar. Let’s grab a few beers, relax and get ready, as we look down to the sea on that pretty sand dune. From down to mid to mid-up tempo, from Jamaica to Brazil with a French twist, from the 1960s to the 2010s, and everything in between: a selection to warm you up, bring the energy back so you can get to the party full of power. Enjoy!
Some clues on the tracklisting (especially on the French side of things) :
- The mighty Jah Shaka always begins his sets with a Bob Marley tune…
- Caetano – singing in French – brings an old song from French Guiana legend Henri Salvador, an ode to the Caribbean
- The Fugees sure had “Vocab”! When we discovered this tune with the homies in 1994, we knew something was going to happen
- Jeanne Moreau was a French actress, and in the 1960s movie stars used to release songs. The lyrics of this samba reflect the sexual liberation to come in a post-May 1968 France
- Patrick Coutin only made one hit, but what a gem! A seminal teenage dancefloor killer tune, totally perfect on the beach (check out the lyrics!)
- I used to listen to the Fabulosos Cadillacs a lot when I was living in Chile. They mix a typical South-American football stadium energy with political lyrics, at a time when the old dictators were still alive and free
- Elli Medeiros is a French-Uruguayan singer who began in the late 1970s in the Parisian punk scene with the Stinky Toys (they got to play in London with the Clash and the Sex Pistols!) She then moved to new wave with “Elli et Jacno” and went more mainstream, but always with a twist. “Toi mon toi” was her major hit, in 1986
- La Femme is a new school surf band from Biarritz in South West France; a perfect way to close the surf/beach subject, and head to the party
