Prince’s Galaxy and Satellites

Prince penned, gave or/and contributed, openly, incognito or under a moniker, songs to an impressive and eclectic list of fellow artists. Here’s a joyful playlist to reveal the tip of that iceberg.

When it comes to celebrate Prince’s music legacy and his surreal level of creativity output during his whole career, one should not concentrate solely on recordings of his own but also on the extensive spectrum of productions, bands and side-projects he used, so that the music industry would have no other choice but to give him more opportunities to access music lovers.

Prince happened to also pen or give songs for other artists who would give lives of their own to said compositions, with varied artistic or commercial success. This playlist aims at just attempting to reveal a tip — consisting of 30 joyfully selected tracks — of the iceberg of Prince’s versatile and limitless creativity, be it performed by others.

Some of these tracks do feature Prince : with its opener « A Love Bizarre » for instance, a crucial royal anthem duetted with Sheila E., or on guitar to flavor his friend’s (Stevie) song « What the fuss », or for what sounds like an unmistakable classic « Paradigm » with George Clinton, or even for what is arguably the best remix (re-production rather) he has ever made for others with « Gimme Your Love » by Aretha and James.
Miles (Davis) closes the trip with « Penetration », a composition originally intended for side-project Madhouse that he fancied performing live often. Miles and Prince were good friends, their mutual admiration was simply obvious.

There is only one exception in the playlist offered, one song which doesn’t include any performing, writing or remixing by His Royal Highness, and that’s « Are You My Baby ? » by none others than Wendy & Lisa. Fact is, once The Revolution ended and they went ahead for their beautiful following albums under their own name, Prince didn’t appear on any of their albums (he did remix « Lolly Lolly » for a special edition of their album). But it was simply unimaginable for them two not to be there and, truth be told, had we not told you this killing track had no Prince involvement, you’d been happily fooled.

Prince was from another planet, and its satellites constitute a galaxy having Minneapolis for its epicenter. Ready to go onto ? Let’s funkin’ go…!
