Prince under covers

One might feel guilty at enjoying Prince covers, as he openly despised the idea of it and having no say to prevent them. Defying any eternal damnation, here’s a carefully selected bunch of guilty pleasures.

It is of common knowledge that Prince was not too keen on other artists to cover his songs. He had no issue with them being performed live by fellow artists, but certainly was very picky as to when some would dare record studio versions of his material.

That being said, Prince left us five years ago, and while his heirs put out various deluxe projects and have many more to come, it is hard to imagine his repertoire being left alone when it comes to cover it. Well, let’s (re?)discover some of those. Listening to this eclectic selection is just another way to weigh the legacy of his art, timeless, endless, and unmatchable.

The range of artists, genres and moods, from extremely faithful renditions to deviant though vibrant homages, from « masterpieces »  (arguably so) to more anecdotal though quite pleasant cuts, this will hopefully take you to a journey that may be way worth your while. Genres seamlessly interweave : from funk to punk, electro, rock, and exotic also, without forgetting obviously soul and jazz.

Emotions either clash or flow, some covers go way back in the eighties while others are quite recent.
The sequencing has carefully though subjectively been thought after for your listening pleasure, but feel free to listen to it on shuffle mode. Prince, if you hear us, no offense, and should U dislike any of that so much, please do come back here and show us how we wanna B done !

Includes : Nina Simone, Me’Shell, D’Angelo, Pointer Sisters, Latoya Jackson, Tina Turner, Ray Lema, Ginuwine, Cindy Lauper, TLC, Alicia keys, Rod Stewart, Chaka Khan, Sufjan Stevens, DaM-FunK, and others.
